Mission

To preserve and display approximately 4,000 works of art created by Auschwitz prisoners and survivors.

The Auschwitz Prisoner Art Exhibition is planned to be housed in the historical kitchen building of the former Auschwitz I site. It will display works of art from a collection of approximately 4,000 pieces created by prisoners and survivors of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp. The collection includes sketches, drawings and paintings made in secret under extreme duress, as well as works produced by prisoner-artists commissioned by the SS. Additionally, the collection features post-liberation reflections by survivors. As the artworks stand as a vital testament to the suffering, resilience, and hope of the prisoners, the exhibition explores the often-asked question: How did the prisoners feel during their time at Auschwitz?

The non-governmental and independent Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation was established in 2009 by Auschwitz survivor Władysław Bartoszewski with the aim of financing preservation work at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. With the help of a global coalition of donors, the Foundation seeks to preserve the personal belongings of victims and survivors, as well as the entire post-camp infrastructure. The Foundation has also introduced live guided access to the Memorial for remote visitors through the educational online format “Auschwitz. In front of your eyes”. In 1947, survivors established the Memorial on the site of the former camp. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, the Museum draws nearly 2 million visitors from around the world each year.
