Townhall Discussion:
What does the Zeitenwende mean for Hofheim/Taunus and Germany?

Wars and hotspots have been shaking the world to the core and demand a new security policy from Germany as well as a preparedness to take on more responsibility. How do people in Hofheim/Taunus experience the epochal upheavals? What influence do the global crises have on their sense of security? What changes to foreign and security policy are needed to preserve democracy, freedom, the rule of law and prosperity? In addition, disinformation, increasing antisemitism , racism and xenophobia in light of greater instability are leading to a growing polarisation of society. Against this backdrop, how can we ensure democracy remains well-fortified and resilient?

The Munich Security Conference will discuss these and other questions with high-ranking guests at the interactive Zeitenwende on tour townhall meeting, organised in cooperation with the Alfred Landecker Foundation on 18 September 2024. Participants will include Roman Poseck (Hessian Minister of the Interior, Security and Defence, Wiesbaden), Sven Weidlich (Desk manager, Frankfurter Neue Presse, Frankfurt am Main), Nicole Deitelhoff (Director, Leibniz Institute for Peace and Conflict Research, Frankfurt am Main) as well as Ambassador Christoph Heusgen (Chairman of the Munich Security Conference). The event will be moderated by Karina Mößbauer (Chief Political Correspondent, Media Pioneer, Berlin).

“Not everyone has become fully aware of the implications of the Zeitenwende yet. We need to go out into the country and talk to people about it. People in Germany are also concerned about societal polarisation, especially the rise of the far right. At Zeitenwende on tour, we discuss these issues frankly and as equals. With the Alfred Landecker Foundation, we have a great cooperation partner at our side to support this initiative—and we are grateful for that,” says Christoph Heusgen.

Silke Mülherr, Co-CEO of the Alfred Landecker Foundation, welcomes the partnership: "We are delighted to support this project of the Munich Security Conference. Especially in times of increasing division, it is important to shed light on highly political issues from different perspectives - and to consciously take concerns seriously and discuss them on the basis of facts. Zeitenwende on tour creates a space for this kind of open dialogue and thus strengthens trust in our democratic society."

Zeitenwende on tour is aimed at the general public and free of charge. Interested citizens may register via this link. The event will be held in German.

About Zeitenwende on tour:

At Zeitenwende on tour, an initiative supported by the Alfred Landecker Foundation, the Munich Security Conference provides citizens with a forum to have their voices heard—from Flensburg to Furth im Wald, from Friedrichshafen to Rostock, from Neuss to Cottbus. In large-scale town hall discussions, they talk about burning issues of our time as peers with guests from the world of politics, science and society. The Munich Security Conference’s Zeitenwende team also goes into schools and vocational colleges, attends to work council meetings and visits companies, to German Army and government sites and adult education centres. Additional output such as the “Zeitenwende Podcast” and the “Zeitenwende Arena”, an online debate forum, complement this initiative’s engagement across digital channels and social media. Including streams and recordings, the campaign has reached more than 40,000 people. The twelve episodes of the Zeitenwende podcast generated around 20,000 hits.

As part of the Zeitenwende on tour event series, the Munich Security Conference (MSC) has published a book countering false claims about Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Author Nico Lange, military expert and Senior Fellow at the MSC, dissects the ten most common myths and provides readers with solid counterarguments with which they can respond to fake news and Russian-controlled propaganda in discussions. The PDF can be downloaded free of charge here (in German).

About the Munich Security Conference:

The Munich Security Conference (MSC) is the world’s leading forum for debates on international security policy. It provides a platform for diplomatic initiatives and approaches to address the world’s most pressing security risks. The MSC aims to promote trust and contribute to the peaceful resolution of conflicts by providing a platform for long-term, curated yet informal dialogue among the international security community.

About the Alfred Landecker Foundation:

The Alfred Landecker Foundation was founded in 2019 and is based in Berlin. Its aim is to commemorate the Holocaust, tackle antisemitism and strengthen democracy. This task is all the more challenging because trust in democratic institutions is declining while historical revisionism and hatred towards minorities are on the rise. The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine also marks a political turning point that challenges our basic order and democratic values in unexpected ways. The Alfred Landecker Foundation sees it as its mission to help shape this profound political and social change and make a contribution to the future of democracy. To this end, the Foundation brings together and supports a global network of academics and civil society.
