Projects of the former Benckiser Stiftung Zukunft
The Benckiser Stiftung Zukunft supported projects in developing countries that enabled smallholder coffee farmers and their families to escape their extreme poverty.
Among others, the foundation supported the following initiatives:
1. A project with GiveDirectly Inc. in the Iganga District, a coffee-growing area in Uganda. GiveDirectly, Inc. made unconditional cash transfers to 3,500 families living in extreme poverty.
2. A verification/support project with Enveritas Inc. that aimed to rank coffee producers in Uganda according to social, environmental and economic criteria and to verify their sustainability. Smallholder farmers were able to benefit from this approach by, for example, selling their products as "sustainable agricultural products."
3. An agricultural training program for smallholder coffee farmers in Uganda with the aim of increasing crop yields by an average of 50%.
