In April 1944, 19-year-old Rudolf Vrba and fellow prisoner Alfred Wetzler set out on a mission to escape and sound the alarm about the atrocities being committed at the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp. Their extraordinary escape was successful, and their accounts were one of the first comprehensive reports of the camp's inner workings. For Jonathan Freedland, this story holds important lessons for today's society, which he explored in detail in his Alfred Landecker Memorial Lecture on January 28, 2025.
